The security of your financial information is a top priority at Ameris Bank. Knowing how to spot a scam and practice online safety can help you to protect what’s yours.

Use Payment Apps Carefully

Digital payment apps make it easy and convenient to send and receive money. For that reason, they are a target for fraudsters. Only use these apps to send money to people you know and trust.

Know How to Spot a Scam

Do not click on any links within an email or text message unless you are certain of the sender. Also, watch out for poor spelling and grammar. If a message seems suspicious, delete it right away!

Don’t Always Trust the Caller ID

Fraudsters know how to disguise phone numbers too. Don’t assume that because your caller ID says a company’s name that it is actually a representative from that company. Always be cautious, and if a phone call seems suspicious or you’re asked for a password, hang up immediately.

Beware of Scammers Posing as Fraud Department or Government Representatives

No bank or government agency will ask for your account password, to urgently send money or purchase a gift card. This pressure to act immediately is a notorious red flag. Immediately hang up the phone and report the scam attempt to your bank or the agency being impersonated.

If you are suspicious of a phone call, text message or email claiming to be outreach from your bank, do not respond. Instead, call the number listed on the back of your debit or credit card or on your statement to verify.
