After waiting all year, the holidays are here. But, you’re not the only one who has been waiting as cybercriminals take advantage during the holiday season. Know how to keep yourself safe and secure from grinches trying to steal your identity!

If you are traveling for the holidays, follow these tips.

Before You Leave:

1. Update Your Software
Make sure you have the latest security software, web browser and operating system installed on your device. This will help defend against viruses, malware and other online threats.

2. Back Up Your Information
It is always a good practice to back up your data regularly to another device or cloud service.

3. Lock It Up
Get in a habit of locking your device when you are not using it and make sure you have strong passwords.

While You Are Traveling:

1. Use Caution When Connecting
Public Wi-Fi connections are a cybercriminal’s playground. If you do use a public network, don’t conduct activities such as banking or online shopping, where personal information is needed.

2. Think Before You Click
When in doubt, throw it out. Cybercriminals will put bad links in emails or online posts in an effort to compromise your computer and steal personal information. If you are questioning the link, don’t risk it.

3. Guard Your Devices
Don’t leave your devices unattended in a public place. This will help prevent theft and guard against others from having access to your sensitive information. If one of your devices is stolen, having a strong password can help protect you.

4. Think Before You Post
Try and wait to post pictures and turn off your location tagging. Don’t make it easy for criminals to identify where you are. Posting photos, especially this time of year, reminds people that you aren’t home. This could make you a prime target for break-ins.
