A Treasured Lifetime at Ameris Bank
Earlier this month, Ameris Bancorp celebrated 50 years in business. Reaching the half-century mark is not a feat to be taken lightly as it has required forward-thinking, perseverance and a commitment from every channel across the company. Although there has been change since we opened our first location with just $1 million in capital in 1971, our core values that formed the foundation of Ameris have all remained true to this day.
Ameris was built on the importance of being a safe and sound financial institution founded by core values of ethical principles and exceptional customer service. Each day, every one of our nearly 3,000 teammates strives toward a quest for excellence. Our founder, Eugene (Gene) M. Vereen, Jr., wanted a bank that did not rely on cookie-cutter solutions, and instead, wanted to be on the forefront of advances that would benefit our customers.
Advances in technology have been transformative, both operationally and in developing innovative financial products beyond basic checking, savings and consumer loans. The bank has encouraged and fostered bold new ideas for additional efficiencies and optimization in implementing data-driven business decisions. Everything that we do is centered around our customers and how to best help them achieve financial peace of mind.
Our culture finds us at the intersection of people and business. A shared vision – not a shared location or zip code – creates a culture that thrives on change and values innovation. A culture that is “all about the people” has attracted talented and engaged professionals who are genuinely passionate about delivering high-level service to our customers.
Our focus on diversity and inclusion, supported by our Employee Resource Groups, is a bond that unites us. We appreciate a collective sense of belonging and recognize individual talents while embracing differences through new ideas and conversations. This is the harmony of a common goal. All of these are ingredients in our “secret sauce.”
It goes without saying that a company cannot thrive without examples set by strong leadership. This was personified by Gene Vereen, and continues to this day by our CEO, Palmer Proctor. They both embody visionary leaders sharing a compassion for people, competitive spirit for the company to succeed, and sense of urgency with a laser-focused approach. Palmer’s time is always in heavy demand, and it’s easy to admire his unique ability to balance family, career and fun in a winning combination.
I have invested the last 45 years growing at Ameris and being a contributing member of the same company for all that time is a blessing I do not take for granted. I am so fortunate that other bankers, and my family, have cared for me along this journey. My hope is for every teammate to experience what I have – a career fulfilled by doing what I love. When you do, it is not “just a job.” It becomes a treasured lifetime.
