Above all, Ameris Bank's history is built on community banking and customer service.

From our earliest beginnings in August of 1971, the group that began as American Banking Company has been focused on creating a distinctly different way of helping neighbors manage and make the most of their money.

It's a goal we began achieving as early as 1979, with the acquisition of banks throughout our communities in Georgia. Acquisitions continued into the 1980s and 90s. Shortly after going public in May of 1994, we extended our reach into Alabama, and one thing became clear: ABC Bancorp was more than a network of differently named banks. It was time to become the cohesive, single-minded group of financial experts we'd aimed to become more than thirty years earlier. That's when Ameris Bank was born.

In December 2005, we began consolidating our banks under the name they go by now - uniting a dedicated group of people and banks under one name that would be clear to our customers throughout the Southeast.

Since then, we've enjoyed more growth in Georgia and Eastern Alabama. And we've been operating in Florida since 2001 and South Carolina since 2006 – both as the result of acquiring more community banks. But no matter how much we succeed, we'll always stay true to our roots: the local decision making and emphasis on character that started it all in the first place.
